This is my submission to the Jewelry Club seasons theme contest. As you might surmise, the theme is winter.
Just to give you some insight on this piece, each little snowflake unit is comprised of 32 1/8 " id 20 g sterling silver rings. There are 462 rings total and over an ounce of silver.
The snowflake units are completely rigid, while the connecting rings allow freedom of movement.

That being said, this was a devil to photograph. Everytime I put it into the lightbox my camera kept doing that "oooh it's so shiny" vapor trails thing.
I need a model. And a photo studio.

Wow, nice work!** I'd purchase that sort of work, or work like in your heart photo and I personally think that you could consider others would love custom or one of a type creations on Etsy, as well. I've looked around the site and see people doing all styles and types of work. Some cookie cutter and others not. Some costly, others cheaper.

This months creations will all be one of a kind, unless I am asked to recreate a piece. I'm getting good feedback here and have made a few transactions through this site. I'm almost ready to commit to etsy. I will let you know what my experiences are like, if you're not onboard at the time. :)
So.... what does an ounce of chainmail (like your snowflake bracelet) go
for? :):)

ps: I am going through similar issues when photographing silver chain and crystal and pearl beads. Glare and trailing big time. :( I;ve been given the name of a photographer on this site who I plan to discuss these issues with and when I get the time to question him, I will write again with feed back. In the mean time I am using a sculptured art paper for my back ground. It's a paperbag like beige color. It works well with my metals and stones. See some of my more recent submissions. I found this at Michaels crafts in the scrape book department. it comes in a package of ten I think and it cost a few bucks. It works nicely when I use natural sunlight, indirectly. You might try placing some sand box sand in a shallow dish and laying your silver on that. I hope this helps you a bit, Georgeana

thanks on both accounts. I think I would do better if I had a better photo, but I was down to the wire, the deadline is tomorrow and I have a 12 hour day of school and work on Wednesdays.

That looks like a very complicated pattern.
:iconchainmaille:
Maybe a first of it's kind. I'm not sure yet. I sent it over to mailleartisans.org to see if anybody recognizes the weave.

Sculptured art paper does sound like a good idea. I've used some fabrics in the past and had good results. Thanks for the tips. One thing that has kept me from going to Etsy recently is that I have a storefront for my work. One of my friends has a belly-dance studio with a display case in front that I can do commission sales from. That's pretty handy, but isn't a wide exposure base. I think this will be my first Etsy piece. We'll see how it goes :)
Something like this will probably run for about $250. Probably the most expensive piece I've ever made.
:iconflocculus:
Could you get a patent on it if it has not been done before?
:iconchainmaille:
well, that's not how it works. Technically I have a copyright on this bracelet design. But you can't patent a weave, or even copyright it. Although apparently there is some sort of copyright on Mobius. I'm not sure. What I am doing is checking to see if it exists in previous form, and if it doesn't I'll submit it to mailleartisans.org with my name for it.
Which will probably be changed by some asshat that writes a book about it to cash in on maille's popularity.
